Geleitwort Die ökonomische Situation vieler Industriebereiche insbesondere jedoch der Automobil­ industrie in der Gegenwart läßt sich durch zwei charakteristische Merkmale kennzeichnen, die einen weitreichenden Einfluß auf Forschung und Entwicklung in diesen Bereichen aus­ üben. So sehen sich die Hersteller zum einen mit einer zunehmenden Individualisierung der Kundenbedürfuisse und einem wachsenden Qualitätsbewußtsein konfrontiert, was im allge­ meinen zu einer Steigerung der Produktkomplexität und dadurch ausgelöst, zu komplexeren Fertigungsprozessen führt. Zum anderen fordern Globalisierungstendenzen und steigender Wettbewerbsdruck eine Verkürzung der Innovationszyklen. Die Anbieter stehen damit vor der Herausforderung, auf die Bedürfuisse der Kunden zugeschnittene Produkte von hoher Qualität in immer kürzeren Abständen am Markt anzubieten und trotz des daraus resul­ tierenden Kostendrucks den Erwartungen der Shareholder gerecht zu werden. Die Konse­ quenzen dieser Situation müssen in allen Unternehmensbereichen umgesetzt werden.
